We Listen. We Care. We Are Beams.
We Are Beams understand the challenges of caring for a disabled child 24/7 and how for many families this can be an overwhelming, isolating and emotional experience.
Families that include a disabled person or child are more likely to be in poverty than those living in families that do not include a disabled person. This constant financial strain can be overwhelming for many families and they feel alone with no one to turn to.
The Beams Family Advice Team provide the right support to allow parents to make the best choices for their disabled child, providing information and advice on financial matters, education, health and emotional support.
We believe that children deserve the right to an education whatever their disability. Sadly, many families will struggle to access the right education for their disabled child.
Our Family Advice Service help families put long term coping strategies in place, helping families to ensure their wishes and child’s voices are heard.
A donation of just £10, will provide the initial call with a Family Advisor, helping a family in crisis to start their journey to a bigger and brighter future. Our team of advisors, many with disabled children of their own provide support groups, 1 to 1 advice clinics, telephone helpline and parent workshops and courses, to enable families to be better equipped to deal with the emotions and challenges of raising a child with disabilities.
Help us to continue to support families through our Family Advice Service by making a donation today.
Yasmin and Adam’s Story
Our Family Advice Service provide the right advice to allow parents make the best choices for their disabled child, providing information and advice on financial matters, education, health and emotional support. The team recently supported Yasmin and her family.
Adam has Epilepsy and Angelman’s Syndrome a genetic condition that affects the nervous system and causes delayed development and seizures. His needs are severe and complex, which affects his cognition and learning, communication, interaction and his mobility.
Yasmin who is a single parent with little family support had recently moved into the local area. When the family moved, the local authority recovered all the specialist equipment, including Adam’s bed and this resulted in Adam sleeping on the floor. Yasmin’s first language is not English and found the move very unsettling and over whelming. The family were in crisis and were in desperate need for not only specialist equipment for Adam but also help settling into the new area and finding schools.
Luckily, Home Start alerted Beams to the family’s situation and the team quickly got to work supporting Yasmin, including securing schools for Adam’s siblings, help with household bills and paperwork.
Adam has been attending overnight respite 1-1 care at Dragon’s Retreat 2 days a month, which has allowed Yasmin quality time with her daughters’ safe in the knowledge that Adam is being cared for.
Yasmin is so grateful for all the help she has received from Beams and knows that her family is in a much better position now,
“Everyone at Beams was so quick to understand my situation and the help I needed. They knew what I was going through and I do not know how I can thank them enough for everything they have done. They have made our lives so much better”
