We Are Beams

Freya’s Story

Freya lives with her Mum, Dad, and younger sister. Freya is 12 years old and lives with neuro development conditions of ADHD and Autism.

Freya also has learning difficulties and can get very upset and frustrated with those around her. This can result in verbal or physical aggression particularly towards her family.
These outbursts can be upsetting and overwhelming for the family especially for her younger sister.

The family first heard about We Are Beams through Freya’s social worker and now Freya visits Dragon’s Retreat Respite Unit for overnight care.

Freya is very kind hearted and enjoys supporting the other children and young people at Dragon’s Retreat often by interacting with non-verbal communication including sign language.

Freya often struggles to fit in with her peers and being at Beam’s has given her the opportunity to socialize with other young people with additional needs.

The visits to Dragon’s Retreat and support from the short breaks team have made a positive difference to Freya’s confidence and the outbursts.

While Freya attends respite care, the family are able to have a break from the constant care and spend quality time with their younger daughter.

Freya’s mum Melanie is so grateful to all the team at We Are Beams,

“We are so grateful for the ongoing support from We Are Beams and can see the impact it has had on Freya. Recently, we took part in the Colour Dash to support the charity and give something back. It was an amazing experience for all our family to come together, have fun, and get messy while raising funds for such a worthy cause.”
