A group of 36 determined individuals from the Welling and Bexleyheath community have raised an incredible £2,000 for We Are Beams by successfully pulling a 32-tonne truck a staggering two miles from Welling to Bexleyheath.

The incredible feat of strength and determination took place on Saturday 13th July as part of the Uniformed Services Day celebrations. Over 5,000 spectators lined the streets to witness this incredible display of community pulling together.

The event was the brainchild of Barry Saunders from Welling Town Business Associates, who was inspired to support We Are Beams after visiting the six bedded respite unit and learning about the support the charity provide for disabled children in the local area.

Barry was joined by representatives from Bexleyheath Bid, British Army, London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan police service, Maritime Radio, Deamonink Welling, Local Councillors and MPs and Bexley Borough Council providing the event with a real sense of local community.

 “This was an incredibly challenging but rewarding experience,” said Barry Saunders.

“Seeing the support from the local community and knowing that the money raised will make a real difference to the lives of disabled children makes it all worthwhile. This was an event I had done before. It is a tough event, and one that I vowed I would never do again. This was until I met Luke from We Are Beams. Meeting him and hearing all about the amazing work the charity does within the community changed my mind!“

Beams are truly grateful to Barry and everyone involved in both raising vital funds and spreading the word about the charity’s support services.

All proceeds from this event will go directly towards our care services to children, including Family Advice, Respite Care, and Summer Play Schemes.
