In a remarkable show of determination and community spirit, 36 men and women from Welling and Bexleyheath came together to pull a 32-tonne Army truck two miles, in support of local charity We Are Beams.
The incredible feat of strength and determination took place on Saturday, 12th July, as part of the Uniformed Services Day celebrations. Over 5000 spectators lined the streets to witness this incredible display of community pulling together. In total, four trucks took part, with an amazing £20,000 raised for Beams and three other great causes.
Barry Saunders from Bexleyheath BID/Welling Town Business Associates, who organises this annual event, explains why he got involved,
“It takes a huge amount of planning and effort to pull something like this together, and I’m truly thankful to everyone who played a part in making it possible. The encouragement from the local community was amazing, and knowing the funds raised will directly support disabled children and their families makes all the hard work worthwhile”

Representatives from Bexleyheath BID, the British Army, London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police Service, Maritime Radio, Deamonink Welling, as well as local councillors and MPs joined Barry.
Luke Cashin, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at We Are Beams, also took part in the pull.
“It was a privilege to take part! It certainly was not easy, with the majority of the route being uphill, but what a fantastic way to spread the message about Beams! Thank you to Barry and all those involved in raising much-needed funds and spreading the message about our vital services.”

All proceeds from this event will go directly towards Beams care services to children, including Family Advice, Respite Care, and Summer Play Schemes.
