On Saturday 25th July, Bexleyheath Town Centre was filled with pride, joy and an incredible sense of community as local people came together for a truly unforgettable challenge.

In a remarkable display of strength and teamwork, brave volunteers from Welling and Bexleyheath joined forces to pull a 32-tonne Army truck for two miles, raising vital funds for We Are Beams.

The impressive feat took place as part of the town’s Uniformed Services Day celebrations, with more than 5,000 spectators lining the streets to cheer the teams on. Six trucks took part in total, raising an amazing £6,000 for the six charities supported by the event.

Barry Saunders, who organises the annual event, said:

“An event of this scale takes an enormous amount of organisation, but seeing the community come together makes every bit of it worthwhile. Knowing that the money raised will help provide essential support to disabled children and their families makes the whole experience even more special.”

Barry was joined by representatives from the British Army, London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, the Metropolitan Police Service, Maritime Radio, alongside local councillors and MPs.

Luke Cashin, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at We Are Beams, also took part in the challenge.

“It was fantastic to be part of such an amazing event and to see first-hand the gritted determination of everyone involved. We are so grateful to Barry for his on going support, the teams who took part and everyone who helped make the event a success. All the money raised will help us continue providing vital services to children and families who need us.”

All proceeds from the event will go directly towards Beams care services for children and families, including Family Advice, Respite Care and Summer Play Schemes.
